Beyond LOVE, Robert Indiana is mostly concerned with NUMBERS and geometrical forms in his printmaking. The latter he uses as a form of signpost, set in an artistic context. It all began when he and some other artists from Art in America were invited to redesign the American currency. He created his famous “New Glory Penny” with the centrally focussed number 1 – his first colour serigraphy, which was then exhibited in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Playing with geometrical figures and numbers that resonate with meaning was Indiana’s great passion. He increasingly perfected it over the course of the decades. For his striking pictures with their huge, clearly divided colour segments, serigraphy was the best printing technique. With the Domberger Siebdruck Werkstätten, he had the best possible partner for this work. Many of his graphic works were printed there.
