Magnelli, Alberto

*1888 Florenz (Italy) - †1971 Meudon (France)

With the Florentine artist Alberto Magnelli, Italian painters, too, turned to abstraction around 1915. Although Magnelli returned to figurative painting for a while, in 1930 he decided to adopt an entirely abstract style for good. He was influenced by Kazimir Malevich’s suprematism and Mondrian’s neoplasticism. Moving to France in 1930 brought him in touch with eminent figures from the École de Paris such as Hans Arp, Sonia and Robert Delaunay and Wassily Kandinsky, among others.
