| | Details:"Jeremiah's lamentations" (The Prophets) In his first series based on the bible, Marc Chagall paid particular attention to the prophets. Two lithographs of this series depict Jeremiah, the profound prophet tortured by the responsibility of his vocation as a prophet and concerns for his people. In this illustration, he claps the Torah scroll tightly to his chest and does not appear to take notice of the people around him. Lost in thought in his frequently experienced solitude, he contemplates one of his numerous conflicts and bemoans his isolation and even doubts God because of the heavy burden of his office. In the Jewish tradition, Jeremiah’s lamentations are recited at various celebrations and occasions to this day.
