| | Details:"Ruth Gleaning" In this second of altogether five lithographs about the life of Ruth, Chagall shows his “heroine“ returning from collecting ears of corn and happily greeting her mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth, Naomi’s daughter-in-law, is struggling, living abroad and having to worry about the two women’s future as foreigners (Ruth 2,1-3). Nevertheless, Chagall used bright, lucid shades of pink – maybe in order to give us a hint: this is about love, in many respects. It is about Ruth’s caring love to her mother-in-law, who succeeds in keeping the two women alive with her diligence, and about the start of the love relationship between Ruth and Boaz, who will soon become aware of the exceptional woman and fall in love with her. Marc Chagall dedicated a sequence of five lithographs to the chapter of Ruth. This one is the second on the woman who became Boaz’ wife and consequently King David’s primordial mother through love, faithfulness and consistency.
