"Ruth at the feet of Boaz" - Exhibit with minor flaws at a reduced price

This is one of Chagall’s typical pieces of art, in which he gives voice to his almost coy perception of sexuality. By moonlight, Ruth lay down beside Boaz upon the suggestion of her mother-in-law Naomi. The two widows fear for their lives and therefore deem it appropriate to seduce the wealthy and good-hearted Boaz with their female charm – the end justifies the means (3:7 et seqq.). Chagall does not show us that Boaz will wake up around midnight and that Ruth will seduce him. Due to the Church’s hostile attitude towards sexuality up until recently, Chagall did not dare to be more direct in this respect. Only Ruth’s bare breast hints at the erotic situation. To enhance the painting’s colour composition, Chagall lavishly used all available shades of brown.

Marc Chagall dedicated a sequence of five graphics to the chapter of Ruth. This one is the fourth and second to last piece on the woman who became Boaz’ wife and consequently King David’s primordial mother through love, faithfulness and consistency.

Remarks: Biblical reference: Book of Ruth (3:7 et seqq.)

In 1956, the French art critic and publisher Tériade brought out a special issue of the legendary art magazine Verve, which was exclusively devoted to one of Marc Chagalls major themes: The Bible. For this outstanding issue, Chagall composed 18 full-page colour lithographs and 12 in black and white. For his "Bible I" Marc Chagall focused on characters from the Old Testament such as the Founding Fathers, the Kings, the Prophets and Angels. Four years later, in 1960, the follow-up issue "Illustrations for The Bible" was published, with another 24 gorgeous color lithographs. Since then, vast numbers of reproductions were put in circulation which are anything but original(!) lithographs.
