Moore, Henry

*1898 Castleford (UK) – †1986 Much Hadham (UK)

Henry Moore was a highly prolific British artist who became known for his bronzes and marble sculptures of the female body with rounded forms. His very peculiar sculptures were influenced by primitive art, especially Toltec art. Moore's work lived through two world wars without losing its original look and suggestive power. The artist created a style that is recognizable at first sight.

As a child, Henry Moore discovered the aesthetics of Assyrian and Babylonian art. It was these impressions that led to the choice of his first tools and technique of woodcarving. In 1921 Moore studied at the Royal College of Art in London where he deepened his knowledge of tribal art and came into contact with sculptures belonging to rich ethnographic collections in the city. In 1928 Moore opened his first solo exhibition with the Warren Gallery in London.

The artist also practiced various printing and drawing techniques to re-establish the basis to his own aesthetic vocabulary. There are numerous impressive etchings and lithographs through which the artist fleetingly brought his objects from the third dimension onto paper. These graphic works even aroused the interest of collectors of Moore's plastic works. He won many awards, including entry into the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1950. Today Henry Moore's works are exhibited in major museums around the world, such as in North America and the United Kingdom (Tate Gallery).
