Details:

"Sketch for Murals" 1922 / 1958

Shortly before leaving and moving into the Bauhaus in Weimar, Kandinsky was working on four wall paintings for the 1922 Berlin "Juryfreie Kunstausstellung" in the Glaspalast at Lehrter Bahnhof. He worked on the wall paintings for several weeks. Initially, they were intended for the reception of an art museum. Three of the walls were interrupted by a door, only the fourth one was fully available, so to say, for artistic use. For this front wall, Kandinsky created the draft available here. In his wonderful book  "Wassily Kandinsky - Leben und Werk", Will Grohmann wrote the following  about it:

"It is the most passionate painting that Kandinsky created in post-war times, with glowing colours on black and a Russian character." It was probably due to this strong expressiveness that the draft was lithographed in 1953 by Mourlot. In the same year, it was published by Maeght, Paris, in the portfolio "Sur quatre murs" that accompanied the exhibition "Exposition d'œuvres monumentales". The colour lithograph offered here comes from this portfolio from 1958.
