| | Details:"Paradise" II, The Green Donkey The eye of the beholder naturally comes to rest on Chagall's bright green donkey. In those days, donkeys were considered to be peaceful and good-natured, and this is how it is depicted in this work. The donkey's head appears decorated as for a pageant. Left of the animal, a bit to the side, you can see the first human couple: Adam, an exceptionally handsome young man with curly hair. He puts his hand over Eve to protect the only being of Creation who is a potential sexual partner for him. She is depicted naked and full-bosomed - a sign for fertility and unbiasedness about all flesh. In a carefree manner, they enjoy the fruit of the Garden of Eden. The green colour of the donkey also appears in their bodies, it is the colour of hope and a fulfilled life. In this work, Chagall depicted plants, animals and human beings in peaceful harmony with each other. The longing for these paradise-like conditions has remained a human desire to this day.
