Details:

"The Maid of Israel" (Mourlot 231)

Marc Chagall dedicated this wonderful motif to God’s love for Israel. The guardian angel, who seems to float into the picture from the upper half, symbolized the divine care for the Israeli people. Chagall represents this dramatic event in his inimitable way.

He illustrates this scene with a shining orange surface that emanates a protective warmth and, at the same time, danger. In the background, a child is seeking its mother’s help. The woman who is holding her beloved in her arms is looking for the angel’s protection. Chagall shows the forceful and dynamic flight, the determined readiness to help, but also the angel’s elusiveness in bright hues and a modest yellow ochre. Thus the white angel figure in its sumptuous light contrasts with the shining background and floats protectively over the pair of lovers. The feeling of safe comfort can be easily taken up by the viewer.

In 1956, the French art critic and publisher Tériade brought out a special issue of the legendary art magazine Verve, which was exclusively devoted to one of Marc Chagalls major themes: The Bible. For this outstanding issue, Chagall composed 18 full-page colour lithographs and 12 in black and white. For his "Bible I" Marc Chagall focused on characters from the Old Testament such as the Founding Fathers, the Kings, the Prophets and Angels. Four years later, in 1960, the follow-up issue "Illustrations for The Bible" was published, with another 24 gorgeous color lithographs. Since then, vast numbers of reproductions were put in circulation which are anything but original(!) lithographs.
